An interview whit Helena Legend.
How did you become interested in the world of electronic music?
I fell in love with Electronic music from a young age, I loved house, techno and electro, but a defining moment for me was seeing Daft Punk at a festival at 14 and I was totally hooked on Electronic music from then on in. Obsessed you might say!
Which artists have been your inspiration to develop your career as DJ and producer?
In the earlier days Steve Angello, Alesso and Carl Cox were big inspirations, but it moves as the scene changes, I love what DJ Snake and the Chainsmokers have been able to achieve the last few years it’s been very inspiring.
Have you had difficult times in your career and if so how have you managed to get out of them?
I think most artists have, I have hit lows and highs throughout my career. The music industry is tough it’s not easy, it’s literally a constant hustle every day and that can be mentally and physically exhausting. I get through the lows by remembering how far I have come from nothing so giving up is not an option. You have to stay focussed, aim big and work hard and eventually you come through the rough patch you hit. It’s not easy, but nothing worth chasing ever is I don’t think.
How can you describe the Helena Legend sound?
It’s hard to describe as I cross genres a lot, but when I play I love tracks with good energy so that is what I gravitate towards musically in my sets. I play a mix of trap, electro, house, and drum driven music.
My production style of late I have been making slower tracks with solid hooky vocals more electronic trap influenced I guess. I’m just making music I like I don’t ever really think of what box it will fit into.
How are you feeling with your latest EP released on Sony and Ultra Records?
I have released 2 EPs in the last 6 months, I have been so stoked at how they came out and the reaction to them has been fantastic, it’s really set the pace for me for 2017 I am working on lots of follow up singles for the rest of the year.
Referring to your new single “Dose of You” what was your inspiration to team up with Kristin to create it?
I linked up with Kirstin through mutual contacts and we connected straight away, she’s a great talent and was just about to launch her solo artist project, so we thought it would be cool to have her feature on one of my tracks we both come from different musical worlds so thought it would be good to cross out audiences to new sounds.
What is next for Helena Legend on this year?
This year I am hoping to spread my wings musically and release on some new labels I am working on lots of singles and will be collaborating with different artists. The usual daily hustle and worldwide tours, I am also very busy with working on the launch of my new fashion label, so I’m spending a lot of time when I’m home in LA working on designing and putting my first collection together. Juggling studio, music, fashion and touring, it’s definitely keeping me busy.
If you were to choose a current producer, who would you choose to make a collaboration?
Skrillex would be unreal, he’s so talented, it would be a huge honor to work with him.
If you had not been DJ or Producer what another job or hobby would have chosen?
I actually studied fashion design at College before I went into music as a career, so I think this is where I might have ended up.. but as I said previously about me launching my fashion label, I thought why not chase all your dreams? There is no reason why I can’t do both, music and fashion go hand in hand so it’s very exciting for me to now working on something else that was always a huge passion of mine.
